Brookhaven Field sits in Lincoln County in southwest Mississippi and dates to the wartime wave of drilling that followed Tinsley and Heidelberg. It produces from the Tuscaloosa, the Upper Cretaceous sandstone that has carried much of the state’s oil, and it has been managed as a waterflood for most of its producing life. The field is mature. Rates are low, water handling is the dominant cost, and mineral ownership in the county has been divided repeatedly through eight decades of Mississippi estates — often without the probate record ever being completed.
Mississippi’s oil industry began at Tinsley in 1939 and expanded rapidly during the Second World War, when domestic supply mattered more than it ever had. Heidelberg came in at the end of 1943, Baxterville in 1944, and Brookhaven belongs to the same wave of southwest Mississippi discoveries. The Tuscaloosa sandstone was the target across much of that activity. Leasing moved through Lincoln County farm and timber land in a matter of months, and the mineral reservations written into ordinary land sales in those years are the root of most present-day fractional ownership.
Primary production drew reservoir pressure down within the first decade or two, as it does in a Tuscaloosa sand without a strong natural drive, and waterflooding became the means of extending field life. Injected water sweeps oil toward producing wells and holds pressure up, and a well-run flood can double what a field would otherwise recover. The trade-off is that produced water volumes climb steadily for the rest of the field’s life. By the later decades Brookhaven was producing far more water than oil, which is the normal end state for a flood of this age.
Mississippi is unusual in having a large natural carbon dioxide supply at Jackson Dome, and a pipeline network was built out from it to convert mature fields to tertiary flooding — Tinsley, Heidelberg and others. Whether that network has been extended to a particular southwest Mississippi field, and whether it is being injected today, is a question to answer from current Oil and Gas Board records rather than from any published history. Operatorship in this part of the state has also changed hands more than once, most recently with ExxonMobil’s 2023 acquisition of Denbury.
Brookhaven produces from the Tuscaloosa, an Upper Cretaceous sandstone that is the principal oil reservoir of southwest Mississippi and the same interval that made Baxterville the state’s largest field by cumulative oil. Traps in the Mississippi Salt Basin are shaped by movement of the deep Louann salt, which arches and faults the overlying section into closures. Sand quality and thickness vary across those structures, so lease performance within a single field is rarely uniform. That variability is the reason a field-wide average tells an individual owner very little.
Brookhaven’s documented recovery history is primary production followed by waterflooding, which is the classic Tuscaloosa treatment in this part of Mississippi. A flood at this stage of life is about managing water: lifting it, separating it, disposing of it, and deciding when the cost of doing so exceeds the value of the oil it carries. That calculation, not geology, now sets the field’s remaining life. If an operator has converted or proposes to convert part of the field to carbon dioxide injection, that would change the outlook materially, and it is worth verifying rather than assuming.
Lincoln County royalty interests are usually small, old and attached to wells whose economics turn on water handling.
