The Texas Company located Hewitt using classic surface geology — mapping the anticline’s expression at the surface — and completed the discovery well on June 5, 1919, about fifteen miles west of Ardmore. Coming in during the price surge after the First World War, the field triggered another Carter County boom, drawing operators and workers who had cut their teeth at Healdton next door and extending the Ragtown-era oil economy of the greater Healdton-Hewitt district well into the 1920s.
Hewitt’s sands proved deeper and more powerful than Healdton’s. The field’s signature moment came in May 1924, when Carter Oil Company’s Noble No. 33 began flowing 12,800 barrels a day — one of the largest initial flows ever recorded in Oklahoma. By the close of the first half of the twentieth century, the greater Healdton-Hewitt field had produced an astounding 320 million barrels, and Hewitt held rank as southern Oklahoma’s second-largest field on its own.
As flush production declined, Hewitt followed the standard arc of Oklahoma’s conventional giants: denser drilling, settled stripper production, then unitization and waterflooding of the Hoxbar and Deese sands to recover bypassed oil. Independents have operated the old units for decades since, and the field’s cumulative output — commonly tallied around a quarter of a billion barrels — continues to inch upward more than a century after The Texas Company’s geologists first walked the outcrop.
Hewitt produces from stacked Pennsylvanian sandstones of the Hoxbar and Deese groups, folded over an anticline on the northwestern flank of the Ardmore Basin. The structure was plain enough to be mapped from the surface in 1919, but the reservoir story is one of multiple lensing sands at varying depths rather than a single blanket pay — deeper and higher-pressure than neighboring Healdton’s shallow sands, which is why Hewitt produced monsters like the Noble No. 33. That multi-sand stacking later made unit-by-unit waterflooding the natural development path.
Waterflooding gave Hewitt its long second life. After primary depletion, operators unitized the field’s Hoxbar and Deese sands and injected water to restore pressure, sweeping oil toward producers that flush-era drainage had left behind. The floods, and the stripper leases around them, have supported continuous production — and continuous royalty payments — for generations beyond what primary recovery would have allowed. For owners, that history matters: remaining value sits disproportionately in the actively flooded units, not the field average.
