Jay produces from the Upper Jurassic Smackover formation, a carbonate deposited on the northern rim of the Gulf Coast salt basin, with additional pay in the underlying Norphlet sandstone. Reservoir quality in the Smackover here comes largely from dolomitization, and the trap is stratigraphic — porosity development and updip loss of reservoir quality confine the accumulation rather than a simple structural closure. Depth is close to 15,500 feet, and the produced stream contains hydrogen sulphide, so the field has always required sour-service equipment and processing. It is a deep, high-pressure system very unlike Florida’s shallow south-state fields.
Nitrogen, not water or carbon dioxide, is the injectant at Jay. Nitrogen injected above the minimum miscibility pressure develops miscibility with the reservoir oil through a vaporizing drive, displacing oil that pressure depletion alone would leave behind, and the project has been run in conjunction with water injection as a water-alternating-gas scheme. Nitrogen is attractive here because it can be generated from air on site rather than purchased and piped, but the process demands very high reservoir pressure. Published studies describe repeated full-field simulation work aimed at extending injection as the field matured.
