Lawrence Field, often called the Main Consolidated field, has been producing since 1906 and is the oldest of the Illinois Basin giants. Straddling Lawrence and Crawford counties, it has yielded more than 400 million barrels through primary and waterflood recovery from shallow Bridgeport and Robinson sandstones, with Cypress sandstone and McClosky limestone contributing on parts of the field. It is also the site of the most serious alkaline-surfactant-polymer flood work in the Illinois Basin. For owners, it is a very old, very shallow, very fragmented royalty province with unusually long-lived production.
Illinois oil began in Clark County in 1904, and the Lawrence and Crawford county fields followed in 1906. The Ohio Oil Company built its early organization around them, opening offices at Casey and later at Robinson, Marshall and Bridgeport. Development was rapid and dense: the pay sands were only 750 to 1,000 feet deep, cable-tool drilling was cheap, and operators put wells on tight spacing across farm ground. Illinois briefly ranked among the leading oil states, and the leases and mineral reservations from that decade still govern much of the acreage.
The field settled into a long second act after the initial boom faded. Waterflooding was introduced and extended across the shallow sands, sustaining production through the middle of the twentieth century and beyond. Cumulative recovery passed 400 million barrels — an extraordinary figure for a field producing from sands a few hundred feet down. Ownership fragmented steadily as farms were subdivided, estates settled and mineral fractions conveyed, leaving a title record in Lawrence and Crawford counties that runs back more than a hundred years.
In recent decades Lawrence has been the focus of serious enhanced-recovery research. Department of Energy-supported reservoir characterization of the Bridgeport and Cypress sandstones was carried out specifically to support alkaline-surfactant-polymer flooding, with laboratory work suggesting large volumes of remaining oil could be targeted by chemical methods. Field application in the basin has been selective and staged rather than universal, and the practical lesson for owners is to separate documented, funded projects from possibilities described in technical studies.
Lawrence produces from a stack of shallow Pennsylvanian and Mississippian sandstones. The Bridgeport sand — three separate lenses between roughly 750 and 1,000 feet — and the Robinson sand carry much of the historical volume, with Cypress sandstone and the McClosky oolitic limestone productive elsewhere in the field. These are lenticular channel and bar sands, so continuity is imperfect and individual lenses can be productive on one tract and absent on the next. The shallow depth is central to the field’s economics: wells are inexpensive to drill, work over and operate.
Waterflooding has carried Lawrence for most of its second century, sweeping the shallow Bridgeport and Robinson sands with injected water. On top of that, the field hosts the Illinois Basin’s most developed alkaline-surfactant-polymer work: laboratory and reservoir characterization studies funded through the Department of Energy examined chemical flooding of the Bridgeport and Cypress sandstones, with published estimates that substantial additional oil could be targeted. Chemical floods are capital-intensive and sensitive to price, so deployment has been staged and selective. Owners should verify what is actually funded and injecting on their specific lease.
A field producing since 1906 leaves behind exceptionally tangled title — mineral fractions divided across five or six generations, old reservations, and interests held by people unaware they own them.
