The discovery well blew in on December 4, 1928, flowing over 6,500 barrels a day from the Arbuckle dolomite, and within a few years derricks marched through neighborhoods to the doors of the State Capitol itself. The Indian Territory Illuminating Oil Company and Foster Petroleum brought in the Oklahoma City No. 1 on December 4, 1928, when it blew in at 6,402 feet with an initial gauge of 6,565 barrels a day from the Arbuckle. Development raced north into the city, and the deeper Wilcox sand of the Simpson Group proved the field’s great pay — enormously prolific and driven by strong water pressure that made early wells both spectacular and dangerous to control.
On March 26, 1930, ITIO’s Mary Sudik No. 1 got away from its crew and became "Wild Mary Sudik," spewing roughly twenty thousand barrels of oil and two hundred million cubic feet of gas daily for eleven days while national radio broadcast updates and oil mist reportedly drifted as far as Norman. Capped on the third attempt, the well made the field world-famous and pushed Oklahoma City to adopt some of the era’s most contested urban-drilling and proration rules — Governor Murray at one point used National Guard troops to enforce production limits.
The field’s politics were as distinctive as its geology: drilling zones were fought ward by ward inside a capital city, and in 1941–42 the state itself joined in, placing wells on the Capitol grounds. The best known, Petunia No. 1, was whipstocked from the middle of a flowerbed to drain the oil directly beneath the Capitol building. Through 1969 the field had produced more than 735 million barrels and over two trillion cubic feet of gas from twenty-six zones, and a museum-piece derrick still marks the Capitol grounds today.
The Oklahoma City field drapes over a sharply uplifted, fault-bounded structure at the southern end of the Nemaha ridge, where deeply eroded lower Paleozoic rocks — the Ordovician Wilcox sand of the Simpson Group, the Hunton, and the Arbuckle dolomite among twenty-six productive zones — are sealed beneath younger cover. The Wilcox was the marquee reservoir: exceptionally permeable and backed by a strong natural water drive that both powered the field’s huge early wells and swept the reservoir efficiently without large-scale artificial flooding.
