Orcutt occupies about 4,220 acres of the Solomon Hills just south of the town of Orcutt in Santa Barbara County, and it is the field that made Union Oil. Company geologist William Warren Orcutt led the work that found it in 1901, and in 1904 the field produced Old Maud, a well so large it was described as the biggest oil producer on the continent to that date. More than a century later Orcutt is still the largest onshore producing field in Santa Barbara County.
Union Oil sent William Warren Orcutt into the Santa Maria area at the end of the nineteenth century, and in October 1901 the company’s third well on the Careaga lease came in at 150 barrels a day. That well opened the Santa Maria Basin as an oil province. Three years later, drillers struck oil in what became Old Maud, a well reported to have flowed 12,000 barrels a day at the start — an enormous rate for 1904, and one that made the Solomon Hills a national story and pulled capital into the whole district.
The field peaked early. Annual production reached about 8.7 million barrels in 1908, a level it would never see again, and the long decline that followed is typical of fields developed before pressure maintenance was understood. Waterflooding began in 1951, and gas injection and alkaline flooding were tried later. Drilling also went deeper over time: the deepest producing zone in the field, at roughly 9,300 feet, was not found until 1981, eighty years after the discovery — a reminder that even famous mature fields can hold undrilled section.
Ownership moved from Union Oil to Unocal, then through Nuevo Energy and Energy Reserves Group, before Breitburn acquired the field in 2004 for about 46.7 million dollars. Pacific Coast Energy Company has since operated portions of the field alongside other companies. Because the Monterey crude here is heavy — roughly 14 to 17 degrees API in the main pool — modern work in the district has leaned on thermal methods, and any expansion of that work runs through Santa Barbara County’s permitting process as well as CalGEM’s.
Orcutt produces from a dome-like structure bounded by faults within the Casmalia-Orcutt Anticline in the Solomon Hills. The principal reservoir is the Monterey Formation, whose fractured siliceous rock yields heavy crude of roughly 14 to 17 degrees API, while shallower horizons produce lighter oil in the 22 to 24 degree range. Producing depths run from shallow zones down to a pool at about 9,300 feet discovered in 1981. As across the Santa Maria Basin, the Monterey serves as both source rock and reservoir, and fracture networks control deliverability.
Secondary recovery at Orcutt began with waterflooding in 1951, followed by gas injection and alkaline flooding — the last an early example of chemical enhanced recovery, in which alkali added to injected water reacts with acids in the crude to reduce interfacial tension. Because the Monterey oil is heavy, thermal methods including cyclic steam are the standard tool for this class of reservoir in the Santa Maria district. Any expansion of injection requires CalGEM permits and, in this county, land-use approval that has historically been contested.
Orcutt is a rare combination: a field more than a century old that still ranks as the largest onshore producer in its county, with deep section found as recently as the 1980s.
