Where the fields along the basin margins produce heavy oil from a few hundred to a few thousand feet, Rio Bravo produces light oil from Stevens turbidite sands far below. The Rio Bravo discovery came in the late 1930s, in the run of deep tests that followed Kettleman Hills and reoriented San Joaquin Valley exploration. Reaching the Stevens sands required rotary rigs and capital that the shallow-field wildcatters of the previous generation did not have, so development fell to larger companies from the start. The wells came in strong, and for a period Rio Bravo was among the more important light-oil producers in a county otherwise defined by tar, steam, and heavy crude.
Deep, high-pressure sand pools decline differently from shallow heavy-oil fields. Natural drive at Rio Bravo supported strong early rates but weakened as the pools were produced, and secondary recovery became necessary far sooner than in a steam field, where heat rather than pressure is the limiting factor. Waterflooding restored pressure and swept oil toward producers, extending field life by decades. Rio Bravo produces from the Stevens sands, Miocene turbidites deposited by submarine fans that carried sand out into the deep part of the San Joaquin Basin, where it was buried in the organic-rich shale that generated the oil. The reservoirs are good-quality sand encased in source and seal, forming stratigraphic traps that require no dramatic surface expression — one reason they were not found until deep drilling became routine. Depths run to several thousand feet, and the crude is light and low in sulfur compared with valley heavy oil.
Rio Bravo is a waterflood rather than a thermal field, which distinguishes it from most of Kern County. Injected water replaces the reservoir energy removed by production and displaces oil toward producing wells; in well-connected turbidite sand, sweep efficiency can be high. The characteristic late-life problem is water cut: eventually wells lift many barrels of water for each barrel of oil, and the cost of lifting, separating, and disposing of that water sets the economic limit.
