Salt Creek, forty miles north of Casper in Natrona County, is Wyoming’s most storied oil field. Oil was first struck on the great anticline in 1889, the Wall Creek gushers of the early 1900s made it for a time the largest light-oil field in the world, and the company town of Midwest still sits at its center. After more than 700 million barrels of cumulative production, the field entered a third century of life in 2004, when a large-scale CO2 miscible flood began restoring output across its century-old sands.
Philip Shannon drilled the field’s first oil well in 1889 into the shallow sand that now bears his name, hauling crude by wagon to his Casper refinery from 1895. The modern boom arrived in 1908, when a Dutch-financed well found the First Wall Creek sand and gushed spectacularly, setting off a scramble that Midwest Refining ultimately consolidated. Through the 1920s Salt Creek was among the most productive fields on earth — for a time the world’s largest source of light crude — and the boom built Casper’s refineries and fortunes.
Salt Creek’s neighbor made it a household name for the wrong reason: Teapot Dome, the naval petroleum reserve adjoining the field to the south, became the center of the Harding administration’s bribery scandal in the 1920s, forever linking this stretch of Natrona County to the era’s oil politics. Salt Creek itself settled into disciplined maturity — unitization, gas reinjection, and from the early 1960s waterflooding under Pan American (later Amoco) — pushing recovery from its stacked Cretaceous sands decade after decade.
In January 2004, Anadarko Petroleum launched full-field CO2 miscible flooding, piping in Wyoming-produced CO2 and investing on the order of $200 million to chase oil a century of primary and secondary recovery had left behind. Production climbed back toward 30,000 barrels a day within a few years, a remarkable trajectory for a field then 115 years old. Anadarko later sold Salt Creek, and subsequent owners have continued operating the flood; cumulative recovery exceeds 700 million barrels of an estimated 1.7 billion originally in place.
Salt Creek is a textbook giant anticline on the southwestern flank of the Powder River Basin — a dome so plainly expressed at the surface that early geologists mapped it on horseback. Production comes from stacked Cretaceous sandstones, principally the First and Second Wall Creek sands of the Frontier Formation, along with the shallow Shannon and deeper Dakota section, with deeper Tensleep potential on parts of the structure. The reservoirs’ lateral continuity across the dome is what made the field both a flush-era monster and, much later, an excellent CO2 flood candidate.
Salt Creek has hosted nearly every recovery method the industry has invented: gas reinjection in the flush era, unit-wide waterflooding from the early 1960s, and since 2004 a full-scale miscible CO2 flood that reversed decades of decline and lifted output several-fold. The CO2 program — among the largest in the Rocky Mountains — works the same Wall Creek sands the 1908 gushers drained, recovering oil neither primary pressure nor water could move.
