Thompson Field lies over a deep-seated salt dome in eastern Fort Bend County, Texas, southwest of Houston near the town of Thompsons. The dome was first drilled successfully in 1921, but the field became a giant a decade later when operators found the Frio flank sands. Thompson Frio alone had produced roughly 325 million barrels by the early 1980s, and additional Vicksburg and deeper Thompson reservoirs added substantially to that total. The field has been developed for more than a century, and mineral ownership in the area is correspondingly fragmented and old.

Early drilling on the Thompson dome followed the same logic that opened Spindletop, Humble and West Columbia: find a structural high, drill the shallow caprock and cap sands, and hope. The 1921 completion proved oil on the structure but not the scale of what lay beneath. Fort Bend County acreage traded actively through the 1920s, and the surrounding sugar and cotton land was leased in small tracts, which is one reason present-day mineral title in the field is divided among so many descendants of the original landowners.
The real expansion came with geophysics. Torsion balance and refraction seismic work in the late 1920s mapped the deep-seated dome accurately enough to place wells on the flanks, and the Thompson Frio discovery in 1931 opened reservoirs far richer than anything found in the shallow section. Additional pools followed through the decade, including North Thompson Upper Vicksburg and the South Thompson 4400 and 5400 reservoirs in 1939. Each new pool brought its own leases, its own unit boundaries and its own royalty decimals.
From the 1940s onward Thompson matured into a managed field, with pressure maintenance and waterflooding applied to keep the Frio sands productive as reservoir energy fell. Operatorship has changed hands many times, and the field today is worked by independents pursuing infill drilling, recompletions and workovers rather than by a single major. Suburban expansion in Fort Bend County has also pushed development close to the field, adding surface constraints that owners of old undivided mineral interests frequently encounter.
The Thompson structure is a deep-seated salt dome that arched but did not pierce the Tertiary section. Oil is trapped in Oligocene Frio sandstones and older Vicksburg sands on the dome flanks, along with Eocene Yegua sands, in a series of fault-bounded compartments radiating from the crest. Because each compartment can hold its own oil-water contact and its own pressure, the field behaves less like one tank and more like a cluster of small reservoirs stacked around a common structure. That compartmentalization is why development continued for decades after the initial discovery.
Thompson has been supported by water injection and pressure maintenance since its mature years, applied reservoir by reservoir rather than field-wide, because the fault compartments do not share pressure. Later operators have concentrated on recompleting existing wellbores into bypassed sands, drilling infill locations between older wells, and restoring injection support where it lapsed. The result is a field that produces at modest rates from a large number of wells. There is no carbon dioxide project at Thompson, so recovery here depends on water handling, mechanical condition of old wellbores and oil prices.
Most Thompson royalty interests are small, old and slowly declining, and honest valuation should start from that. The upside is not a flood response but the possibility that an active independent recompletes or reworks wells in the compartment under your tract, which can lift a check for a few years.
