Big Sinking, in Lee and Estill counties in the hills of east-central Kentucky, is generally described as the state’s largest oil field. It came in around 1918, along the Irvine-Paint Creek fault system on the western edge of the Appalachian Basin, and it was drilled with extraordinary density: thousands of shallow wells producing from the Devonian carbonate that Kentucky drillers have always called the Corniferous. It has been a stripper field for most of its life, and per-well production today is often less than a barrel a day.
Eastern Kentucky drew serious drilling attention in the years around the First World War, and the Big Sinking area proved to be the state’s most productive ground. Development was rapid and dense, encouraged by shallow depths and cheap cable-tool drilling. Leases were carved out of small mountain farms across steep, wooded terrain, and the resulting ownership pattern — small tracts, many separate leases, heirs scattered by a century of out-migration from the Kentucky hills — is one of the most fragmented in the eastern United States.
Because the wells were cheap, the field was drilled far more densely than the reservoir warranted. That produced a large early volume, a fast decline, and an enormous inventory of wells that have made very small amounts of oil for decades. Ownership of the leases passed through many hands, and Kentucky, unlike Texas or Oklahoma, developed no comparable regulatory or record-keeping apparatus in the field’s early years, which has left the title and well records notably thinner than owners expect.
Enhanced recovery has been tried repeatedly at Big Sinking. Operators and researchers have run pilots on the field, including cyclic injection tests and work involving carbon dioxide, in an effort to lift recovery from a reservoir that gave up only a fraction of its oil under primary depletion. Some of that work has been technically encouraging; none of it has changed the field’s essential character. Big Sinking today remains what it has been for generations: a very large number of very small wells.
The pay is a Devonian carbonate that Kentucky drillers traditionally call the Corniferous, lying at shallow depth on the western flank of the Appalachian Basin. Production is closely associated with the Irvine-Paint Creek fault system, where fracturing enhanced the permeability of rock that is otherwise tight — which is why the field is where it is rather than spread evenly across the region. Porosity and fracture density vary greatly over short distances, so neighbouring wells can behave very differently and dry holes sit close to producers.
Big Sinking recovered only a modest fraction of its oil in place on primary production, which is exactly why it has attracted enhanced-recovery attention for decades. Pilots at the field have included cyclic injection schemes and carbon dioxide work aimed at swelling and mobilising oil that fractured carbonate will not otherwise release. Results have been mixed and localised. Owners should regard any enhanced-recovery activity here as a pilot rather than as a committed field-wide programme, and should not price an interest on the assumption that it will be expanded.
