Bradford emerged as a wild oil boomtown during the Pennsylvania oil rush of the late nineteenth century, with drilling in the McKean County hills that intensified through the 1870s and early 1880s. At its peak the district was one of the most important sources of oil in the world, and the town grew accordingly, complete with the refineries, pipelines and speculative fortunes that followed every Appalachian boom. The oil itself is the field’s enduring distinction. Pennsylvania Grade crude from this region is free of asphaltic constituents, carries only trace amounts of sulfur and nitrogen, and has excellent characteristics for refining into lubricants — qualities that made it the premium base stock of the American oil industry. The Kendall racing oils produced in Bradford became nationally known, and the refinery that made them, now operated by American Refining Group, is the oldest continuously operating refinery in the United States.
Shallow Appalachian sands hold oil in rock with little natural drive, so Bradford’s flush production faded quickly. The response is the field’s largest contribution to the industry: operators here first observed that water entering old wells increased production in neighbouring ones, then developed deliberate injection patterns, and the practice of pattern waterflooding spread from Bradford to the rest of the world. Water injection has kept the field producing ever since, but at volumes that would not register in a modern basin.
Bradford produces from the Bradford Third sand, an Upper Devonian sandstone lying at shallow depth beneath the McKean County hills. It is a fine-grained, low-permeability sand with essentially no natural water drive, so oil moves toward wellbores only when something pushes it — which is precisely why the district became the birthplace of secondary recovery. The sand is laterally continuous enough to support closely spaced wells and injection patterns, and the oil it holds is the high-quality paraffinic crude the region is known for.
Waterflooding at Bradford is not an enhancement to production; it is the production. Injected water supplies the reservoir energy the Third sand never had, and pattern flooding — arranging injectors and producers in a regular geometry so that water sweeps the sand efficiently — was worked out here before it was applied anywhere else. More than a century of continuous injection has recovered a large multiple of what primary production would have yielded. The volumes are still very small per well, which is the honest thing for any owner to understand.
