Dora Roberts is a Devonian carbonate field on the western side of the Midland Basin, straddling the Midland and Ector county line. It belongs to the deep-drilling wave of the 1950s, when Permian Basin operators moved below the shallow San Andres and Grayburg pays that had built the region in the 1920s and 1930s and began finding older, tighter carbonate reservoirs. Like most Devonian fields of its generation, it was put on waterflood relatively early and has produced steadily and undramatically since. Midland County came late to production. The Handbook of Texas dates the county’s first oil to 1945 and records that a great boom followed, with the Midland South Pool success in 1947 establishing the wealth of the Permian Basin in local terms. Ector County, immediately west, had been producing since the great 1926 strike on W. E. Connell’s ranch and went on to become the second most productive oil county in Texas. Between them, the two counties supported one of the densest concentrations of drilling activity in the United States through the middle of the twentieth century.
The 1950s were the decade of the deep test. Improved rotary rigs, better mud systems and electric logging let operators drill through the shallow Permian pays into Devonian, Silurian and Ellenburger carbonates thousands of feet below. Dora Roberts belongs to that phase. These deeper reservoirs were smaller in area than the great platform fields but often had good pay thickness, and they were developed on wider spacing with fewer, more expensive wells rather than the crowded lease patterns of the boom era.
Devonian fields of this type generally saw pressure decline quickly under primary production, and operators responded with water injection to maintain pressure and sweep oil toward producers. That is the pattern at Dora Roberts, and it is why the field has continued to produce for decades past what primary depletion alone would have supported. Midland County production has trended down for two generations — from nearly seventeen million barrels in 1956 to around eight and a half million in 1990 — and interests here should be valued on that basis.
The Devonian section of the Midland Basin consists of cherty carbonates and associated siliceous rock deposited well before the Permian reservoirs that made West Texas famous. Pay is deep, often several thousand feet below the San Andres, and porosity tends to be concentrated in specific intervals rather than distributed evenly through the section. Traps in this part of the basin are typically broad structural closures, sometimes with a stratigraphic component where porosity develops or dies out laterally. The practical consequence is uneven well performance across a single field and a strong dependence on how well injection is patterned.
Waterflooding is the mechanism that has kept Dora Roberts alive. Deep carbonate reservoirs lose pressure quickly under primary depletion, so injection was introduced to restore drive energy and displace oil toward producing wells. The engineering challenge in a heterogeneous carbonate is sweep: injected water follows the most permeable streaks and can bypass thick sections of pay, which is why operators periodically convert wells, change patterns and add injection points. A Dora Roberts interest is mature waterflood income: modest, fairly steady, and dependent on the operator continuing to fund injection and workovers.
