Vacuum Field sits west of Hobbs in Lea County, New Mexico, on the Northwest Shelf of the Permian Basin. Discovered in 1929, it grew into one of the state’s largest oil fields, producing from Grayburg and San Andres dolomite at roughly four to five thousand feet. Published reservoir studies credit the San Andres interval alone with more than 360 million barrels, and the field as a whole has yielded a great deal more across its many separately unitized areas. Vacuum takes its name from the surrounding stretch of Lea County ranch country, which early drillers found so empty of water and settlement that the label stuck. The field was discovered in 1929, a year after the Midwest State No. 1 opened the Hobbs field a few miles east and set off New Mexico’s first oil boom. Early wells found shallow Permian dolomite that flowed readily on solution gas drive, and development spread quickly across a broad area on the shelf edge north of the Delaware Basin.
Primary depletion could only reach a fraction of the oil in place. Beginning in the 1950s and accelerating through the 1960s, operators pooled leases into units and converted wells to water injection, restoring reservoir pressure and sweeping oil toward producers. Waterflooding transformed Vacuum from a declining collection of leases into a managed secondary-recovery project, and it is the reason so much of the field’s cumulative production came decades after the discovery wells were drilled. Several distinct units, each with its own operating history, took shape across the field during this period.
The next step was carbon dioxide. From the 1980s onward, portions of Vacuum were placed under miscible or near-miscible CO2 injection, joining the network of Permian Basin floods supplied by CO2 pipelines. Reservoir characterization work published in the AAPG literature noted that even after hundreds of millions of barrels had been produced, roughly two-thirds of the original oil in place remained in the rock — the engineering case for continued injection. Operatorship of the various Vacuum units has changed hands repeatedly over the decades, and owners should confirm current operators from their own statements.
Vacuum produces from the Grayburg and San Andres formations, Permian shelf carbonates deposited on the Northwest Shelf that rims the Delaware Basin. The reservoir is dolomite with variable porosity, deposited in shallow, cyclic marine environments and altered by later diagenesis, so permeability changes over short distances. That heterogeneity is the field’s defining engineering problem: injected water and CO2 preferentially follow the best-connected layers and bypass tighter rock. It is also why detailed reservoir characterization — core studies, seismic, and flow modeling — has been applied at Vacuum more intensively than at many fields its age.
Vacuum has run two generations of enhanced recovery. Waterflooding, established across the field’s units from the mid-twentieth century, repressured the reservoir and remains the workhorse. Miscible CO2 injection followed in later decades, dissolving into residual oil that water alone could not move and pushing recovery beyond the waterflood ceiling. Both methods require sustained capital: injection wells, compression, CO2 purchase and recycling. For a royalty owner, that means production here is not a simple decline curve but a function of how much investment the operator keeps making, year after year.
