Empire Abo is one of the most instructive oil fields in New Mexico. The Abo reef was found by geologic reasoning rather than luck. Explorers postulated a barrier reef of Permian age tracking the hinge line along the margin of the Delaware Basin, and drilling on that concept opened the Empire Abo field in 1957. The reservoir turned out to be dolomitized reef rock with steep dips, covering roughly eleven thousand acres, and estimates of original oil in place ran to several hundred million stock tank barrels. Early wells produced strongly, and development spread along the reef trend through the late 1950s and 1960s.
The field’s defining decision came in the 1970s. Studies showed that oil was draining downward through the steeply dipping reef under gravity, and that letting gas-oil ratios run unchecked at the crest would waste the drive energy. Unitization was proposed on exactly that basis: papers presented to the industry argued that operating the reef as one reservoir, with gas reinjected into the crest and high-ratio wells managed rather than produced flat out, would recover tens of millions of barrels that competitive operation would leave behind. A gas reinjection program was in place by 1974.
Empire Abo then became a long-running engineering laboratory. Operators refined the gravity-drainage model, tracked the descending gas-oil contact, and in later years applied horizontal drainholes to reach oil the vertical wells could not efficiently drain. The field’s recovery efficiency, unusually high for a carbonate, is regularly cited in reservoir engineering literature. Production continues at a mature rate today, and as with most southeastern New Mexico fields, operatorship has changed over time — owners should confirm the current operator from their own statements rather than from older references.

A gravity-drainage unit does not behave like a conventional decline curve, and that catches owners out.
