Wellman is a Wolfcamp reef field in Terry County, on the northwestern shelf of the Permian Basin south of Brownfield. Reef reservoirs of this type are compact in area but unusually thick, which makes them behave very differently from the broad, layered platform fields that dominate West Texas. The field was developed around the middle of the twentieth century, during the decade when Terry County went from a modest producer to a substantial one, and it has been maintained with injection through a long and gradual decline.

Terry County was farming country that had endured drought and depression when, in the Handbook of Texas’s phrasing, those who remained were on hand to greet the discovery of oil in 1940 with jubilation. Production started small: 173,877 barrels in 1944. The county was on the edge of the developed Permian Basin, and it took a decade of drilling before operators had mapped where the productive intervals lay and which structures were worth testing at depth.
The 1950s changed the picture entirely. County production went from over 780,000 barrels in 1950 to 7,463,320 barrels in 1956, an order-of-magnitude increase in six years, and Wellman belongs to that period of development. Reef reservoirs were among the most sought-after targets of the era across West Texas, because a thick carbonate buildup could hold a large volume of oil beneath a small surface footprint and could be drained by relatively few wells compared with a layered platform field.
Terry County peaked later than many of its neighbors, producing 12,282,000 barrels in 1974 and nearly 14.5 million barrels valued at $451 million in 1982. By 1991 almost 363,143,000 barrels had been extracted from the county. Wellman has been associated with enhanced recovery work over the years, including interest in carbon dioxide injection, but public documentation of those programs is thin and we will not characterize them beyond that. The field today is mature and managed for slow decline.
Wellman produces from a Wolfcamp reef, a Permian carbonate buildup that grew vertically on the shelf margin and is therefore thick relative to its areal extent. Reef reservoirs of this type have porosity created both by the original organic framework and by later dolomitization and dissolution, and the resulting pore systems can be excellent but are rarely uniform. The structure’s geometry — a steep-sided mound rather than a broad sheet — means that a handful of wells can drain a large volume, and that reservoir management matters more than well count.
Water injection has been the workhorse at Wellman, restoring pressure lost to primary depletion and displacing oil toward producing wells. In a thick reef, gravity works in the operator’s favor, since injected water can be introduced low in the structure and used to push oil upward, which sweeps far more effectively than a purely horizontal flood. The field has also been connected with carbon dioxide injection work in West Texas, but the public record on its specific program is limited and we will not assert details we cannot verify.
Terry County interests are mature Permian royalties valued on the performance of a specific unit rather than on drilling activity. Reef fields concentrate ownership differently from sprawling platform fields, because the productive area is small, so whether a tract is inside or outside the unit boundary can matter enormously and is worth confirming precisely. Thickness and shape. A reef is a steep-sided carbonate buildup that can be several hundred feet thick over a small area, while most West Texas platform fields are broad, thin and layered. That geometry means fewer wells drain more oil, gravity assists injection, and the boundary between productive and unproductive acreage is unusually sharp.
